FAQ
Product (Non-Caviar)
Our salmon, trout, mackerel, sardines, mussels, and tuna do not - room temperature works great. In the unlikely circumstance you don’t finish the whole tin, we recommend storing it covered in the refrigerator and consuming within 3 days.
Our anchovies are semi-preserved. While they have a shelf life of one year at room temperature, we highly encourage you to refrigerate your anchovies to preserve their peak quality.
Please refer to the below “Caviar” section for inquiries related to storing caviar.
Our salmon and trout have a four-year shelf life. Our tuna, mackerel and sardines have a six year shelf life. Our anchovies have a one-year shelf life and should be refrigerated to maximize quality during this period. Expiration dates are printed on the tins (please feel free to email hello@eatfishwife.com if you are unable to interpret the writing on the tins).
Welcome to the wonderful world of tinned fish! While there is no right or wrong place to start, we often recommend our Smoked Rainbow Trout or Smoked Salmon with Fly By Jing Chili Crisp for first-timers. If you’re game to dive in head-first, opt for The Starter Pack and try all of our best-sellers!
All current tinned fish products other than Smoked Salmon with Sweet + Spicy Zhong are gluten free.
At this time, we do not have a gluten-free certification.
We recommend consulting with your doctor before consuming our products if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or looking to conceive.
This is a quality-assurance, traceability measure from our cannery in Northern Spain that indicates which woman handpacked your tin!
Please consult each product page for a full list of ingredients in each tin.
Our tinned fish products are manufactured in facilities that also process other allergens, including but not limited to shellfish, sesame, wheat, and soy. Each facility takes stringent measures to prevent cross-contact. Customers with severe allergies to any of the listed allergens are advised to exercise caution and consult with a healthcare professional.
The USDA guideline states that any can with a dent large enough to “lay your finger into” should be discarded. If you’re unsure whether your tin fits this description, please send a photo to hello@eatfishwife.com.
All of our tinned fish products are fully cooked and ready to eat straight from the tin - no additional preparation required. Of course, they can be incorporated into warm dishes, pastas, rice bowls, and more if you prefer (check out our Recipes page for inspiration!).
All of our products are boneless except for sardines! The bones found in sardines are completely safe to eat, and are often enjoyed for their nutritional benefits. Many folks report that they are quite soft and barely noticeable! That said, you can always remove them if you’d prefer.
Please note that our Albacore Tunas may contain bones, and our Mussels may contain shell fragments.
At this time, only our Slow Smoked Mackerel with Chili Flakes are Kosher. No other products are Kosher-certified. We hope to introduce more Kosher-certified products in the future, so please keep an eye out.
We partner with responsible fisheries and expert canneries around the world to sustainably source, and pack by hand, the highest-quality seafood possible. The result is a product that’s both convenient and insanely delicious, turning any meal into something satisfying and delightful.
Caviar
Caviar should be refrigerated at a consistent temperature between 32°–38° F. The ideal place to store it is in the coldest part of your refrigerator, like the back bottom drawer - to maintain optimal freshness, store the container in a bowl of ice, and refresh the ice daily.
Unopened caviar will stay fresh until the expiration date printed on the container. However, once opened, it should be consumed within one day (24 hours) for the best quality and taste.
For the purest experience, enjoy caviar on our mother-of-pearl or another non-metallic spoon, as metal (including silver) can impart a metallic taste. Traditional serving suggestions include placing it on a potato chip or blini with a dab of crème fraîche and chopped chives. We also highly suggest trying it on its own to get the full flavor experience.
White sturgeon caviar distinguishes itself through its uniquely soft and fatty texture, setting it apart from other caviar varieties. The higher fat content not only enhances the taste but also provides a smoother, more melt-in-your-mouth experience, making it a highly sought-after delicacy among caviar connoisseurs.
Fresh caviar should have a clean, briny, and slightly oceanic smell. If it has a sour, rancid, or unpleasant odor, it may be spoiled. If it tastes overly sour, metallic, or off, it’s a clear indicator that the caviar is no longer fresh. If the caviar has been opened and left unrefrigerated for too long or the packaging is damaged or swollen, it’s best to discard it. A vacuum-sealed container should stay intact and not show signs of leakage or bulging.
Please email hello@eatfishwife.com and we'll work with you to find a solution! Please also check if the caviar jar is still cool to touch, even if the ice packs have melted.
